Yesterday, Supercartribe brought you news of the quite spectacular Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta that is a star of Sotheby’s online only auction at Palm Beach. Closing on 26th March, the sale is not just about the LaFerrari! Here are some more quite wonderful cars that are going under the hammer in the same sale.
Very Rare Aston Martin
There’s no doubt that the Aston Martin V8 Vantage is among the marque’s most iconic designs. A beautiful brute powered by the legendary 5.3litre V8 – a hand-built marvel that still stands up to its rivals – the Vantage was the fastest production car in the world when it hit the market in 1977, with a 170mph top speed that is still impressive today. The example in the Sotheby’s sale is a glorious white Vantage, but what makes it special is that it is one of the first 16 produced.
It’s what is known as a ‘Bolt-on Fliptail’ example, as these early models had an added flip-up at the rear end, replaced for later models by a fully-integrated example. These don’t come up for sale very often and a guide price of upwards or $150,000 seems a fair estimate to us.
For Bentley and Ferrari Fans
Two cars took our eye here that we know Supercartribe readers will appreciate: a 2009 Bentley Brooklands, finished in stunning black and presented as a 26,000 miles from new model with all luxury options in place, and a superb Ferrari 458 Speciale, a sought-after model that collectors will be hanging on the telephone for when the sale begins.
While these two cars could not be more different – the Bentley is a luxurious ‘Gentleman’s Tourer’ of the highest order, representing luxurious motoring that is beyond reproach, the Ferrari an out and out supercar designed for driver’s delight – what is surprising is that their relative performance is not far apart.
The big Bentley can reach 60mph in 5.3 seconds, the Ferrari gets there in just 3.0. The Bentley’s top speed is 184mph, the Ferrari’s 202mph. What’s 20mph between friends? If either takes your fancy, respective estimates are $90,000 upwards for the Brooklands, and $285,000 for the 458 Speciale.
Off-Road Lamborghini and Vintage Rolls-Royce
The current trend for SUV’s has led supercar marque’s such as Lamborghini, Maserati and Porsche to vie for a piece of the market, each with success. Back in 1986, Lamborghini introduced one of the maddest cars of all time – the quite incredible LM002, an off-road supercar that stemmed from a design project intended for military use called ‘Cheetah’. Massive, brutish and ridiculously fast, this incredible machine was powered by the Countachs 5.2 litre V12 engine. Or, if you really wanted to push the boat out – excuse the pun – you could order Lamborghini’s own 7.2 litre powerboat engine.
The example on offer at Sotheby’s is a later model, built in 1991, and comes with all the luxury fittings that you would expect a rich playboy to order, everything being period as it should be. The LM002 is rarely seen for sale, and a guide price for Lot 315 of $275,000 or more seems light to us.
If you want a more traditional classic, how about this simply glorious example of a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud? This 1959 series 1 model is as sober a car as it gets, with its beautifully crafted four-door body finished in black and the interior in red, and is period correct in every way. Original paint and interior, and a long ownership period with a renowned estate, make this left-hand drive model a rarity. Estimated at $35,000 plus, this is an affordable, genuine classic that deserves an owner who will cherish and show it.
There are many more very impressive lots in the Sotheby’s sale, so while we shelter from the ongoing worldwide virus crisis, check them out and enjoy it!
