There’s something about an open-top Aston Martin that sets the pulse racing. The thought of a 500bhp, 190mph convertible, complete with all the luxury you expect with the marque, is surely enough to put the new Aston Martin Vantage Roadster at the top of your shopping list! Joining the superb Vantage Coupe, which was launched in 2018, it was only a matter of time before this model made its appearance, and it’s been worth the wait.
What makes Aston Martin’s range stand out among the supercars of the day is the overall usability they are designed to provide. Of course, the Vantage Roadster – like its hard-top sister – is able to be drive to speeds that would instantly lose you your licence, and can take you to 60mph from a standstill in just 3.7seconds. Yet, the variable handling modes mean the Vantage Roadster is just as happy in town as it is on the open road, and can easily be used for the school run. Try that everyday in a Lamborghini Huracan.
We should stress, that school run is for only one child as the Vantage Roadster is a dedicated 2-seat car, and that fabulous Aston Martin 4.0litre V8 coupled with a super-fast 8-speed automatic transmission would also be at home on a track, but there’s something docile about the Vantage – until you engage ‘Sport +’ or, if you dare, ‘Track’ mode, at which point the best within is unleashed.
Civilised Driver’s Car
So, the Vantage can either be a civilised place to be, or you can make it a weapon to tackle any rival on the track. But that’s overlooking the main attraction of the Vantage Roadster – the folding roof. Nothing beats wind-in-the-hair motoring, and the new folding roof design incorporated on this car is impressive indeed. It is claimed to be the fastest roof of its type on any car in the world, opening automatically in 6.7 seconds and closing in 6.8 at up to 31mph, and its compact design means it stows away neatly, and still allows for a 200-litre boot space.
Inside the Vantage there is everything you would expect in an Aston Martin: detailed trimming and finishing adds the luxury touch you don’t get on other supercars, and the model is equipped with all the ride control and comfort-aiding systems that are found on the acclaimed Vantage Coupe.
Dr Andy Palmer, CEO and President of Aston Martin, enthused: “Open-top Aston Martins are always firm favourites with our customers, so it’s very exciting to introduce the Vantage Roadster. For many, driving with the roof down is the true definition of the sports car experience as it truly brings your senses to life. Vantage has always delivered the purest of thrills, but in Roadster form that adrenaline rush is set to go to the next level”.
We don’t disagree! If you want an Aston Martin Vantage Roadster – and who in the right mind would not – delivery begins in the second quarter of 2020, and the list price before any options are specified is £126,950 ($161,000 in the USA).
